This creamy whipped butter with olive oil is perfect for spreading on all of your favorite breads! It comes together in just a couple of minutes for an easy homemade spreadable butter.
If you’ve ever tried to spread cold butter on soft bread, you know how frustrating it can be. Your bread gets torn up, your butter is in a thick piece on one side of your bread, and you’re wishing you had softened the butter first.
Spreadable butter solves that problem. Whipping olive oil into butter makes a softer, spreadable butter that is perfect for slathering on nearly everything. Even if you keep it in the fridge, spreadable butter will be significantly softer than regular butter. The olive oil also adds a delightful, rich flavor to your butter!
Grab your favorite butter and some extra virgin olive oil and you are ready to have creamy, spreadable butter perfect for all of your meals.
What You’ll Need
- Butter: I recommend high-quality salted butter.
- Extra virgin olive oil: Again, choose a higher quality oil because there is a noticeable difference in flavor.
- Flaky salt: This is optional, but adds a delicious pop of saltiness to the butter.
- A handheld mixer: You can use a stand mixer or a food processor if you prefer, but I have found a handheld mixer works best.
How to Make Whipped Butter with Olive Oil
Making homemade whipped butter couldn’t be easier! It does take a little planning ahead, however, as you need to soften your butter at room temperature. This could take a couple of hours or more, depending on the temperature of your house. I don’t recommend speeding up this step as it could interfere with the texture and consistency of your whipped butter.
Next, you’ll place your room-temperature butter in a mixing bowl and begin whipping it with a handheld mixer. After about a minute, the butter with have a nice airy texture. Start drizzling in your olive oil while continuing to whip the butter.
Continue whisking with the mixer until the butter and olive oil are well combined in a smooth, delicious spread. Add in a pinch of flaky salt and mix again to distribute it.
Scrape your butter into a glass dish or other airtight container. Store it on the counter for about a week or in the refrigerator for several weeks. Spread on your favorite bread, rolls, English muffins, and more.
How to Store It
You can store this butter in an airtight container such as a glass mason jar for up to a week on the counter. Storing the butter at room temperature will make it more easily spreadable, but it won’t last as long. If you wish to extend the shelf life of the butter, it’s best to store it in the refrigerator and take out small quantities as needed.
Uses for Whipped Butter
Homemade spreadable butter is a healthier alternative to store-bought spreadable butter or margarine. It uses extra virgin olive oil, which provides heart-healthy fats and more.
While it is primarily made for spreading on a piece of bread, many prefer to use olive oil butter in place of regular butter because of its delicious flavor. In fact, olive oil butter makes the perfect accompaniment to just about any savory dish. These are some of my favorite uses for whipped olive oil butter:
- Spread on fresh bread. The best thing about whipped butter is how spreadable it is! You won’t have trouble getting a good dollop on your bread because olive oil butter has a softer consistency than regular butter.
- Use in cooking. This butter is delicious to sear a steak, saute mushrooms, or for anything else you may typically cook in butter.
- Toss your pasta in it. This butter brings so much flavor to a dish and I love mixing hot noodles in it. For a simple pasta dish, I’ll toss hot spaghetti in some olive oil butter and add garlic powder, fresh herbs, and sauteed veggies. It is delicious and quick!
- Slather it on corn on the cob. You’ll love how easy it is to apply this spreadable butter to your corn on the cob. It will also taste even better than it does with plain butter!
Tips
- Use high-quality butter and extra virgin olive oil. Some recipes are perfect for less expensive options, but you don’t want to skimp on this. If you are spreading your fresh butter on a piece of toast or soft bread, you’re going to taste that butter flavor and the notes of olive oil. Make sure they are the most delicious flavors you can get.
- Use real butter for this olive oil butter. Don’t try any other types of butter as they may not work.
- Make this butter extra flavorful with other add-ins. You can add fresh herbs, dried herbs, or some garlic powder to make garlic butter. This is a great recipe for making flavored butter because the additional ingredients can easily be mixed in during the whipping process. You may want to try this tasty pesto butter while you’re at it!
- Don’t use melted butter. It’s best to allow your butter to soften at room temperature without the use of a microwave or stove. You won’t achieve the same consistency using microwave-softened butter.
- If you like your butter less salty, use unsalted butter and add the amount of sea salt flakes you prefer. This a great way to customize this recipe to your liking.
- Feel free to make more of this butter by increasing the ingredients. You can make as much as you like, just be sure the ratio of butter to olive oil is 2:1 (two parts butter, one part oil).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make whipped butter with a different type of oil?
Yes, you can. I prefer olive oil because it adds a rich, savory flavor to the butter. If you aren’t a fan of olive oil or don’t have any on hand, any vegetable oil will do! I would try avocado oil, canola oil, or grapeseed oil.
My butter is too runny. What do I do?
You may find that, after whipping, your butter is too running to spread on anything. This can happen when it’s particularly hot in your house. To get the texture where you want it, try popping the butter spread in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to help the butter harden a bit
