Halloween is right around the corner, and this time of year, I love whipping up some fun Halloween recipes.

As someone who focuses on living a healthy lifestyle, I aim for recipes that feel festive without being overloaded with added sugar.

One of my favorite ways to do this is by making healthy Halloween snacks using apple slices.

These treats are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients, making them a perfect option for any Halloween party or even as a fun school snack.

Let’s dive into two of my favorite healthy Halloween treat ideas—Monster Mouths and Spooky Spider Bites—both of which use simple ingredients like red apples, green apples, and nut butter. Trust me, these are as fun to make as they are to eat!

Monster Apple Mouths: A Fun and Spooky Snack

I’ve been making Monster Mouths for Halloween for years, and they never fail to get laughs!

These little monsters are the perfect mix of sweet and savory, using apple slices, peanut butter, and some mini marshmallows for teeth.

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 red apples or green apples
  • Peanut butter (or almond butter)
  • Mini marshmallows (for teeth)
  • Strawberry slice (for the tongue)
  • Sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds (for sharp teeth)
  • Candy eyes (optional, for extra fun!)

How to Make Monster Mouths:

  1. Slice your apples into thin wedges. To prevent browning, dip the apple slices in a small bowl of lemon juice mixed with cups of cold water.
  2. Spread a layer of peanut butter (or your nut butter of choice, like sunflower seed butter) on the side of each slice.
  3. Line the edges of one apple slice with mini marshmallows to make apple peanut butter teeth.
  4. Add a strawberry slice or a dab of strawberry jam for a tongue.
  5. Place another apple slice on top to complete the monster’s mouth.
  6. For a bit more fun, you can stick candy eyes on top, or for sharper teeth, add some sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds.

These apple monsters are so easy to make, and they’re a hit with kids of all ages! It’s a great way to sneak in some healthy snacks while still enjoying the Halloween spirit.

Spooky Apple Spider Bites: Another Fun Halloween Snack

For something a bit creepier but still super healthy, Spooky Spider Bites are another one of my go-to healthy Halloween recipes. These are quick to make and use simple ingredients you probably already have at home.

Ingredients:

  • Green apples
  • Almond butter or cashew butter
  • Pretzel sticks (for spider legs)
  • Slivered almonds or chocolate chips (for spider eyes)

How to Make Spooky Spider Bites:

  1. Slice your green apples into rounds. Thin slices work best to get that spooky look.
  2. Spread a layer of almond butter or cashew butter on one side of each apple slice.
  3. Break pretzel sticks in half and stick 3-4 pieces into each side of the apple slice to form spider legs.
  4. For eyes, add two slivered almonds or stick on chocolate chips using a bit of maple syrup as glue.

These little spooky snacks are great for parties or as a fun Halloween craft with the kids. They’re the perfect size for popping into your mouth, and the sweetness of the marshmallows mixed with the crunchy pretzel sticks makes for a great flavor combination.

Tips for Success

To make sure your Halloween apples look as good as they taste, here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way:

  • Use a sharp paring knife or sharp knife to get clean, precise cuts on your apples.
  • Dip your apple slices in lemon juice to keep them from browning while you assemble the snacks.
  • For a more filling treat, use whole-grain crackers or whole wheat options on your board for dipping.
  • Make sure your nut butter is smooth so it spreads easily on the apple slices. If you have peanut allergies in the family, sunflower seed butter or almond butter are great options.

Get Creative with Your Halloween Snacks

If you’re looking for more fun ideas to pair with these Halloween apple treats, try using different types of apples (I love mixing red apples and green apples for color contrast).

You can also add slivered almonds or chocolate chips as extra toppings. The key is to have much fun with it and enjoy the process.

These monster mouths and spooky spiders are great Halloween crafts for kids of all ages, and the best part? They’re made with simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

I hope you have as much fun making them as I do!
