Homemade nutella pancake recipe

Picture this: as soon as you’re biting into your pancake, you feel that golden-brown crust break, giving you a slight crisp with a cloud-like softness inside. But that’s not it – as soon as you’re tasting the sweetness of the pancake, you’re also having a warm chocolate, so gooey rich, and creamy with a hazelnut blend hugging your taste buds.

This blend between the airy, tender pancakes with a slight crip, and that chocolate hazelnut blend gives you this comforting warmth of flavors and textures filling your mouth with something you will not be able to get enough of!

There are three ways to make these homemade pancakes with Nutella: one where you’re adding Nutella to the batter, one where you’re having regular pancakes with Nutella as a topping, and one where you’re packing Nutella into the pancakes itself – I will explain to you both ways as the ingredients are the exact same for both.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Nutella Pancakes

Step 1: The first step is to take a large bowl and add flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to it, then whisk it all together well.

Step 2: Next, melt the butter either in the microwave or on the stove. Then take a separate medium bowl and beat the egg yolk with a hand mixer or food processor and mix the buttermilk and melted butter into it.

Note: If you want the version where you’re adding Nutella to the batter for the Nutella-y taste, microwave it in a microwave-safe bowl for about 20-30 seconds to make it easier to mix – then add it to the wet ingredients in step 2.

Step 3: Pour the wet mix from step 2 into the large bowl with the flour and stir it until it’s all well combined, just make sure to not overmix it – it’s okay if there are a few lumps!

Tip: If you have time, let the batter rest for 20-30 minutes, this will give you a creamier batter.

Step 4: Heat a non-stick pan or skillet over medium heat and lightly grease it with butter or oil.

Step 5: Pour about 1/4 cup of the batter into the hot pan and cook it until it forms bubbles on the surface, then flip it and cook until it’s golden brown on both sides.

Step 6: Repeat this until you’ve finished the batter.

Lastly, add Nutella and any other toppings on top and enjoy while they’re warm!

Step-by-Step Instructions for Nutella Stuffed Pancakes

This is going to be the fun version, where you’re getting to show off your culinary skills to others after I teach you this trick! Ever wonder how they make lava cakes with hot chocolate inside the baked brownie? I’m about to give you the secret!

The secret is to freeze a bit of Nutella and add it when you’re making the pancakes! Let me show you how!

Step 1: Start by taking a baking tray of some sort and placing parchment paper on it (see-through foil works too!) – then take a big spoonful of Nutella and place it on the covered tray. Here, you want to spread it to small disks of Nutella to make it either to add them to the pancakes.

Once done, place it in the freezer for about 1-2 hours, you want the Nutella to be hard and easy to pick up like chocolate.

Step 2: For the batter, you’re doing the exact same steps as above, but here again the short form of it: Take a large bowl and place all dry ingredients, such as flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt to it before you mix it all well.

Step 3: Here, you’re mixing the wet ingredients, so: take a separate medium bowl and beat an egg before you add melted butter and buttermilk to it.

Step 4: Mix the wet ingredients from step 3 into the dry ingredients from step 2 and whisk it all, don’t worry about a few lumps in it.

Step 5: Heat a pan and grease it with butter or oil – now you need to act quickly and take your frozen disc of Nutella out of the freezer. Place about half of your 1/4 cup of batter into the pan and place the Nutella disk on top quickly, then add the other half of your 1/4 cup batter.

Step 6: Flip the pancake once it starts showing bubbles at the top (~ 2 minutes), before you flip it though, double check that it’s golden brown on the button.

Step 7: Continue doing this until you run out of batter – enjoy hot with your favorite toppings!

Expert Tips for This Delicious Recipe

These tips will help you with both versions!

  • After your 3rd or 4th pancake, add some more butter or oil to it to prevent burning.
  • Shoot for an even ~ 1 inch thickness with the Nutella discs, you want it thick enough to give you that chocolat-y taste, but also not too thin that it’ll break as soon as you take it out of the freezer
  • If your nutella spills or bursts in the pancake, make sure to clean it up before frying a new pancake, otherwise you’ll end up with burned bits.
  • Before serving, warm up some nutella in the microwave and have some extra nutella drizzle on top for garnish!
  • Store the remaining batter in the fridge in an airtight container if you have some left over.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Most common questions for this recipe!

Why do you put milk instead of water in pancakes?

The short answer is that milk adds richness, flavor, and texture to the pancakes. The fat content of the milk gives it this moist, soft, and fluffy texture as it reacts with baking powder and soda, which will make the pancakes rise. Further, regarding nutritional value, milk adds calcium and protein, which makes them at least a little bit healthy.

What is the secret to good pancakes?

The secret to good pancakes is having fresh ingredients, not over stirring the batter, and serving them warm, especially when they’re stuffed with hot nutella.

How to make a perfect first pancake?

The first pancake seems to be always going wrong because the heat isn’t evenly distributed yet in the pan, however, to try to get the best first one, try this: Heat your griddle or non-stick pan with a bit of oil or butter over medium-heat, add the pancake and wait until it starts bubbling. Before flipping it, check if the side underneath is golden brown, if it is, flip it and let it cook for another 2-3 minutes.

How long should you let your batter rest?

If you have time let the pancake batter rest in the fridge for 30 minutes to get the best texture as the flour particles have time to absorb the liquid in the batter and soften and the gluten proteins have time to develop to give you those tender pancakes.

What makes pancakes fluffy and rise?

Those fluffy pancakes that you love so much are due to the baking powder inside the recipe, though the baking soda is also essential for any baking goods and it’s making them rise.
